How To Train Your Snail

With just 5 weeks to go until the highly anticipated event Snailed, you’re probably starting to think about training your Snail will need to do in order to be fully fit for the upcoming race.

Exercise

It’s important that your snail is at peak fitness so it has the stamina to go all the way in this race, 13 inches is a long way! The majority of snails that fail to make the grade in this particular type of track are the ones that tire out before the end.

Ideally, your snail should be fairly active and should be able to cover the width 13inchs a day by race day. If you’re snail is able to cover this from the get go, great! If not you have plenty of time to build up your snails fitness levels!

The idea is to build up the distance over a period of time, slowly but steadily. To have one long slither a week, followed by smaller distances to help improve speed. Below is a training guide you can use to train your snail:

Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday
Week 1

Slither 4 inchs Rest Slither 4 inchs Rest Slither 7 inchs Rest Rest
Week 2

Slither 5 inchs Rest Slither 6 inchs Rest Slither 9 inchs Rest Rest
Week 3

Slither 7 inchs Rest Slither 7 inchs Rest Slither 13 inchs Rest Rest
Week 4

Slither 6 inchs Rest Slither 6 inchs Rest Slither 9 inchs Rest Rest
Week 5

Rest Rest Slither 6 inchs Rest Rest Rest Rest

On the 5th week, your snail should only have 1 training day. On this day they should only cover 6 inchs. It’s important that you don’t over train your snail. Especially in the week building up to the race, where you want it to do a minimal amount of exercise not to tire it out.

Training Ground

The best place to train your snail, in order to help them improve stamina and speed is on a damp surface. Research suggest that French windows are an ideal training ground for you snail.

Nutrition

It’s important that your snail consumes plenty of protein throughout its training. A high protein lettuce, such as Romaine Lettuce which contains around 17% protein, is ideal for a snail in training.
